The Mercedes SS models of the late twenties were some of the most exciting cars of their period. With a powerful supercharged seven litre engine, a four speed gear box and twin carburettos, this coupe version was capable 100 m.p.h., whilst modified versions went very much faster and were extremely successful racing cars.

The Mercedes-Benz SS (Super Sport) was a luxurious sports car built in Bremen from 1928 to 1933. The S Class, to which this SS belonged, was the last series designed by Ferdinand Porsche before he started his own company.

The (Y16-2) 1928 Mercedes-Benz SS joined the range in 1972.

Variations/Rarities: It originally had cast in differential details but this made it difficult to fit the rear axle so the differential detail was quickly removed. At the same time the luggage trunk was given a textured finish. These modifications were all carried out very early in production but there was one later modification to the windscreen frame which was thickened from 1mm to 2mm (approx).
In 1985 the roof was modified to give it a folded down appearance which was later deleted and the original closed roof was reinstated.
The earlier issue with the differential detail cast in is rare.

The Mercedes appeared in no less than six different colour schemes and there were many shade variations. The white version was probably the prettiest model which Lesney went on to ruin by fitting purple wall tyres on to it.

The rarest variant of this model is with a white body and gloss black chassis components. A very limited number of these were assembled.
